How to read these ranges

These ranges come from our advisors' mandates and from interviews with professionals across Greater Montreal. Our analysis started in summer 2025. We use three levels: “entry-level” means your first experience in the role, “mid-level” means 3 to 5 years in the role, and “experienced” means more than 5 years.

There's an official benchmark to put these numbers in context. In Quebec, information systems specialists (NOC 21222) earn a median wage of $46.15 an hour, or about $96,000 a year based on a 40-hour week (our calculation). Wages range from $30.00 an hour (about $62,400) to $63.19 an hour (about $131,400), according to Job Bank, with data last updated November 19, 2025. The scopes differ (a broad occupation versus specific roles), so treat the two as a rough frame, not an apples-to-apples match.

We're seeing a market in transition: budgets are tighter and employers are hiring selectively. These ranges reflect a more cautious market than a few years ago.

Why leadership and architecture top the list

Leadership and architecture roles pay the most because they drive decisions that cost the company real money: budgets, infrastructure, security, teams. Pay follows responsibility. A highly skilled developer hits a ceiling sooner than a director or architect who sets the technology direction for the whole organization. Curious which profiles employers are chasing hardest? IT leadership roles

In our data, IT directors fall between $120K and $170K+ depending on the role and experience. The development director reaches $170K+ at the experienced level, and the security director $160K+. Nationally, the median wage for computer and information systems managers (NOC 20012) is $66.67 an hour according to Job Bank, or about $138,700 a year (our calculation, 40-hour week). That figure is for Canada as a whole, not Quebec.

Architects and technical experts

Enterprise architect is the second-highest-paying role in our data: $140K in a first role, $170K at mid-level, $225K at the experienced level. Solutions architects start at $120K and top $200K once experienced. Cloud and infrastructure architects also start at $120K and climb to $145K at the experienced level.

One detail changes how you read this: “entry-level” here means your first experience in the role, not in your career. A cloud architect in a first architect role ($120K) earns as much as an experienced full-stack developer ($120K) and more than an experienced back-end developer ($110K). If pay is your goal, moving into architecture matters more than seniority in development alone. For engineering profiles, our breakdown of computer engineer salaries in Quebec shows how pay varies by specialization.

To show how fast this market moves, we filled a systems administrator role for a Montreal public agency in seven days, when public-sector processes often drag on for months. Infrastructure profiles are in constant demand.

How experience affects your pay

Going from entry-level to experienced adds anywhere from 15% (network and security technician) to more than 70% (database administrator) to your salary, depending on the role. In the examples below, the gap runs around 20 to 40%. Beyond that, what you earn depends on your industry, company size and whether you manage a team, three factors that always shade our ranges.

From entry-level to experienced: How big are the gaps?

Here's the dollar gap for a few roles:

  • Systems administrator: from $80K to $110K, or $30K more (about 38%).
  • Full-stack developer: from $90K to $120K, or $30K more (about 33%).
  • Cloud architect: from $120K to $145K, or $25K more (about 21%).
  • IT vice president: from $170K to $225K+, or at least $55K more.

The gap is widest in data and BI: a data analyst goes from $60K to $100K, and a database administrator from $70K to $120K.

Base salary or total compensation?

Gross salary doesn't tell the whole story. In Quebec, 95% of information systems specialists (NOC 21222) receive at least one employer benefit: a pension plan, insurance, paid leave. The candidates we meet also want more meaning, balance and recognition than they used to. When you're interviewing, compare two offers as a whole: hybrid schedule, insurance, room to grow. An offer that's $5K lower can end up being worth more once you count all of that.

Where does your salary land in the market?

Now you've got the ranges by role and level to compare against. If your pay sits below the range for your level, or if you're aiming for an architect or leadership role, let's talk. Your questions about IT salaries in Quebec

Can you earn more than $100K in IT without a university degree?

It's possible, but a degree is still the norm. Job Bank says information systems specialists usually need a university degree. Our ranges don't break out pay by degree: they're based on the role and experience. Salaries of $100K and up mostly apply to experienced or architecture roles.

Does cybersecurity pay better than development?

It pays better early on, then the gap closes. A network and security administrator earns $90K to start and $100K at mid-level, versus $80K and $90K for a back-end developer. At the experienced level, both reach $110K. At the leadership level, the development director edges out the security director ($170K+ versus $160K+). For role-by-role detail, see the cybersecurity salary guides for Quebec.

Will AI push IT salaries down?

We don't measure AI's effect directly. What we see is salaries leveling off, or even slipping slightly, with raises concentrated in strategic profiles while generalist roles face downward pressure. So specialization protects your pay better than versatility alone.

Do contractors earn more than employees?

The numbers on this page describe employee salaries. A contractor rate isn't directly comparable: it doesn't include benefits, paid vacation or insurance. Before you compare, convert your offer into total compensation.

How do you negotiate your salary in IT?

Back yourself up with concrete arguments: a market range like the ones on this page, your achievements, your level of experience. Set a minimum you'd accept and a realistic target before the interview. Negotiation is about aligning your profile's value with the market, not about demanding more.
